Not every stain on your concrete comes from the same source. Here’s what’s actually causing the discoloration
on Lexington driveways, patios, and parking lots, and why some stains lift easily while others don’t.

Not every dark mark on a driveway or patio comes from the same source. Some of it is dirt and organic buildup like the algae and mildew we cover on our Algae, Mold & Mildew page. A lot of what shows up on Lexington’s concrete surfaces is a different problem: staining from oil, rust, vehicle residue, and something specific to this part of Kentucky, red clay.

Why This Happens Here

Lexington sits in the Inner Bluegrass region, on top of Lexington Limestone, a formation the U.S. Geological Survey has documented as the
bedrock across this part of Central Kentucky. As that limestone breaks down over time, it leaves behind thick residual soil. That soil carries
the reddish tint that gets tracked onto driveways, patios, and sidewalks after a hard rain or from yard work near a concrete edge.

A dropped or spilled stain is a single event. Red clay staining works into concrete’s pores gradually, a little at a time, from runoff and foot traffic.
Two driveways that look about the same age can have very different staining depending on how much bare soil, mulch, or unpaved ground sits
near the edge of the concrete.

What It Affects

Driveways & Garage Floors

Driveways and garage floors deal with the widest range of staining because they combine vehicle use with direct exposure to the ground. Oil drips, tire marks, and general vehicle residue build up here. Red clay runoff from the yard often gets tracked in too, especially after heavy rain. Battery acid is a less common but real one, since it can etch or discolor concrete if it sits long enough.

Parking Lots, Dumpster Pads & Loading Docks

Parking lots, dumpster pads, and loading docks face a commercial version of the same problem, just at a larger scale with more vehicle and foot traffic contributing to it. Grease, oil spots, and rust from parked equipment or vehicles collect steadily in these high traffic areas.

Patios

Patios usually pick up a narrower kind of staining, mostly rust from furniture legs, planters, and metal fixtures left in one place for a while, instead of the oil and vehicle residue a driveway sees.

What Determines If a Stain Comes Out

This is the part that surprises a lot of people. Staining still sitting near the surface, even if it looks bad, usually responds well to the right pretreatment and cleaning approach. Oil, rust, and red clay that have had months or years to work into the concrete’s pores penetrate deeper than a surface clean can always reach. Older concrete is also more porous than newer concrete, so it absorbs staining faster and holds onto it longer.

An honest assessment matters more than a guaranteed before and after photo here. A stain that’s a few weeks old and one that’s been there for three years can need very different amounts of work, even if they look similar side by side.
