Are Hard on Concrete, Decks & Fences
Lexington’s winters swing between freezing and thawing more than most climates, and that back and forth is what
actually cracks concrete and loosens deck and fence joints. Here’s how it happens and what it affects.
Lexington’s winters don’t stay cold in one steady stretch. That’s the reason freeze-thaw damage is such a common problem here. Properties in a climate that freezes hard and stays frozen for months see less of this. The constant back and forth between freezing and thawing does the real damage over time.
Why This Happens Here
Lexington’s winter temperatures swing more than people expect. Daytime highs in January typically sit in the low 40s, while nighttime lows drop
into the mid 20s, based on the National Weather Service’s 30-year climate normals for the region. Most winter days here cross the freezing line at least once, sometimes more.
Water that gets into small cracks, joints, or porous surfaces during a thaw has nowhere to go once temperatures drop again. As it freezes, it expands, putting pressure on whatever’s holding it: a hairline crack in a driveway, a gap between deck boards, a joint in a fence post. Repeat that dozens of times over a winter, and small weaknesses turn into bigger ones.
Lexington’s freeze-thaw pattern has also been shifting. A University of Kentucky Ag Weather analysis found the average first fall freeze across Central Kentucky has moved later over the past several decades, now typically landing in late October or early November instead of earlier in the season. That’s a longer stretch of mild fall weather before winter fully sets in, but it doesn’t reduce how many freeze-thaw cycles happen once winter arrives, just when the season starts and ends.
When It’s Worst
The riskiest stretch runs from around late November through early March, when Lexington reliably sees both above and below freezing temperatures within the same week, sometimes the same day. Full deep freezes, where the ground stays frozen for an extended period, are less common here than in northern states. Instead, Lexington gets repeated cycling: a cold snap, a thaw, rain or melting snow finding its way into cracks and joints, then another freeze.
That repeated cycling is harder on a property than one long, steady winter. Every cycle is another chance for trapped moisture to expand and stress a surface that’s already showing wear.
What It Affects
Concrete
Concrete takes on water through hairline cracks and porous spots, especially older concrete or sections with some wear already. Once that water freezes and expands, cracks widen, and a small cosmetic issue becomes a bigger one. New concrete needs a full curing period before it can handle a Lexington winter well. We recommend waiting at least 28 days after a pour before any cleaning or sealing.
Decks & Fences
Decks and fences deal with the same expansion problem in wood joints, screw holes, and gaps between boards. Moisture trapped there during a thaw and frozen overnight can split wood fibers or work fasteners loose over a season.
Gutters
Gutters face a related but different risk. When gutters are clogged heading into winter, trapped water can freeze inside the system. That ice buildup adds weight and stress the gutters weren’t designed to hold, sometimes leading to ice dams along the roofline.
Keeping surfaces clean and free of trapped debris before winter sets in doesn’t stop freeze-thaw cycling. It reduces how much moisture has a chance to collect and freeze in the first place.
